Did you know?……that a formal Gaelic Irish name usually is made up of a first name or given name and a surname, as is found in English. And the Irish have a very old system for naming children - the 1st son is named after the father’s father, the 2nd son after the mother’s father, and the 3rd son after the father. The 1st daughter after the mother’s mother (are you still with me?!), the 2nd daughter after the father’s mother, the 3rd daughter after the mother. Thereafter, the parents get to chose how to name any further children. This has led to some quite odd or names becoming very well known - e.g. Assumptas and also Perpetuas are in plentiful supply, and in the fifties the births registrars were inundated with new Theresas and Bernadettes soon after they shortly after they were made saints. Many families still use this method of naming their children, but secular names seem to be the order of the day now, driven by the TV and MTV!.
